“American Icons” features music of the mandolin with string quintet, beginning with music from the Italian baroque, where the instruments originated, and ranging through a variety of contemporary American genres. Bluegrass, jazz standards and arrangements of cellist/composer Diego Garcia, and  finally, contemporary classical works of American composers such as David Balakrishnan and Walter Piston are only a few of the musical gems which make this program sparkle.

Solly Burton, the nineteen year old, self-taught mandolin virtuoso from Graysville Indiana, is featured as guest artist with Gibbs & Main. Solly has won a number of prestigious competitions, including NPR’s “From the Top”. He has also been featured performing with Ricky Skaggs.

“American Icons” explores the various cultures, which influenced the development of musical traditions in America, with light and informative narration presented in between works, by Terry Smith.
